What is Luna?

It was made by two New Zealand women who wanted a calmer, more honest companion for the rhythm your body already keeps.

Do I need an account to use Luna?

No. You can start as a guest and use everything in the free version offline, without ever creating an account. An account is only needed if you want your history backed up and synced across devices, or if you subscribe to Luna Pro - your account is how your membership follows you from one phone to the next. You can sign in with Google, or with Apple on iPhone.

Which devices does Luna work on?

Luna is available on iPhone and iPad from the App Store, and on Android phones from Google Play. There is no web or desktop version. If your device is on an older operating system, the store listing will tell you whether Luna can be installed.

How do I set Luna up?

Accepted Answer

Luna walks you through it the first time you open it. It asks what brings you to Luna, where you are in your journey, roughly when your last period started, and how long your cycle usually runs - a rough guess is completely fine, and there's an "I don't remember" option for every one of them. If you skip the details, Luna starts with a typical 28-day cycle and learns yours as you log.

Can I choose a light or dark theme?

Yes. Luna comes in light and dark, and can follow whatever your phone is set to. You'll pick one during setup and can change it any time in Preferences.

Can I change what's on my home screen?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your home screen is made of cards you can drag into whatever order suits you, and switch off the ones you don't want. You can also change the centrepiece between a cycle dial, a simple view and an editorial view - Luna Pro adds a moon visual.

How does Luna predict my period?

Luna works from the period start dates you've logged and how long your cycles have actually been running. After two logged periods it starts using your own average rather than a default, and it keeps updating as you log more. Until then it uses the cycle length you set when you first opened the app.

Can I use Luna if my cycles are irregular?

Yes. Luna is built to adapt rather than assume. Predictions will be less precise while it's still learning your pattern, but logging consistently is what sharpens them. You can also tell Luna your own cycle length at any time instead of letting it learn, and you can let it know at setup whether your cycles are regular, irregular, just starting, postpartum, or perimenopausal.

What do the four cycle phases mean?

Menstrual is your period - hormones are at their lowest and energy usually is too. Follicular follows, as oestrogen rises and energy and mood climb with it. Ovulatory is the short peak in the middle, when energy and fertility are highest. Luteal is the long stretch afterwards, when progesterone rises and things gradually wind down before your next period. Luna frames them as seasons - winter, spring, summer, autumn - because that's closer to how they actually feel.

What is the fertile window?

It's the stretch of days around ovulation when pregnancy is most likely. Luna estimates it from your cycle length and marks it on the calendar. It is an estimate based on your logged history, and it should not be used on its own as a method of contraception.

Question 12

My period is late and Luna keeps counting. Is that a bug?

No, that's deliberate. Luna never assumes your period has started just because the calendar says it's due - it only counts a period as begun once you've logged flow. So if your predicted date passes and nothing is logged, your cycle day keeps climbing past 28 and Luna tells you how many days you're past the estimate, rather than quietly resetting to day one.

Can I log a day I forgot about?

Yes. When you open a new log, tap the date at the top and pick any day in the past. To change something you've already logged, tap a day that has a ring around it and edit it, or delete it entirely.

Flow, mood, energy, sleep, symptoms and your own notes. With Luna Pro you can dictate notes out loud instead of typing them.

Can I take something to my doctor?

Yes. Luna can generate a doctor-ready report from your history that you can save, print or share at an appointment. The free version includes one report; Luna Pro makes them unlimited. It's a summary of what you've recorded, not a diagnostic tool - your healthcare provider is the one to interpret it.

How much does Luna Pro cost?

Luna Pro is available monthly or annually, and the annual plan works out cheaper per month. Prices are set per country and shown in your own currency inside the app, since billing goes through the App Store or Google Play.

Can I cancel?

Accepted Answer

Yes, any time. Luna Pro renews automatically until you cancel, and because billing runs through the App Store or Google Play, you cancel it in your store account rather than in Luna.

I already subscribed but Luna isn't showing it.

Accepted Answer

Make sure you're signed in with the same account you subscribed on, then use "Restore Purchases" in your account settings. Your membership is tied to your Luna account so it travels with you between devices.

What happens to my data if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. Your logs stay exactly where they are - you just go back to seeing the last 90 days and the free set of features. Everything reappears if you subscribe again.

Where is my data stored?

Accepted Answer

On your phone, by default. Luna is built local-first, so everything you log lives on your own device and works offline. If you're on Luna Pro and signed in, you can also back it up to Luna's secure cloud so you can restore it on a new phone - and that only happens because you chose it.

Do you sell my data?

No. Luna has no ads and does not sell or share your data for advertising. It was built to support you, not to sell you - that promise is the third thing the app tells you when you open it for the first time.

Can I get my data out of Luna?

Yes, whenever you like. You can export a full backup file, or export a spreadsheet of your period history, daily logs and settings to save or share. You can also import a backup file to restore everything onto a new device.

Can I delete everything?

Yes. You can clear all the data on your device, which permanently removes your history, logs and preferences. Separately, you can delete your Luna account entirely, which removes your logs, settings and cloud backups for good. If you have a Luna Pro subscription, cancel it in your store account first - deleting your account doesn't stop the billing.

Why does Luna ask for the microphone or my photos?

Only for things you choose to do. The microphone is for dictating notes instead of typing them, and photo access is for setting a profile picture or adding a cover image to an exported report. Decline them and everything else in Luna works exactly the same.

A heads-up a couple of days before your period is due, a nudge to log on days you haven't, and a weekly recap. Luna Pro adds a fertile-window reminder, a gentle prompt if your period is running late, and one piece of daily guidance shaped to the phase you're in.

Will Luna spam me?

No. You choose the level - everything, just the important things, or nothing at all - and you can change it whenever you like. Luna also skips the log nudge on days you've already logged, and never asks for notification permission before explaining what it's for.

No. Every reminder is scheduled on your own phone. Nothing about your cycle is sent to a server to work out when to notify you.

Some are calculated straight from your own logs, some come from where you are in your cycle, some are the typical pattern most cycles follow rather than a reading of your body, some are drawn from articles backed by peer-reviewed research and clinical guidelines, and some come from wisdom traditions and are offered for reflection.

What is the maramataka in Luna?

Maramataka translates as "everything under the influence of the moon" - the traditional Māori way of marking time. Rather than a handful of phases, it names each night of the moon and reads the energy of each one as a guide for rest, connection and action. Luna shows tonight's pō alongside your cycle, adapted from Tāwhai (2013) via All Right?, and you can turn it off if it isn't for you.

Is the maramataka in Luna accurate?

Yes - it's calculated from the true new and full moon, anchored to New Zealand days, so the first night lands on the actual new moon and Te Rākaunui on the actual full moon, matching the printed wheels to the day. It's mātauranga Māori and taonga, so cultural accuracy is the whole point.

With Luna Pro, yes. You can scroll the calendar into the future to see your estimated upcoming phases, colour-coded by how well each day tends to suit social plans, heavy exercise, rest, focus and intimacy. You can pin an event to a future day and reflect afterwards on whether it felt good or off, so you learn what actually works for you. Estimates get less certain the further ahead you look.
